IndigiNews

tansi,

Too often we see Indigenous stories reported by non-Indigenous journalists who lack cultural sensitivity or context. Sometimes, this lack of cross-cultural understanding, relationships, or lived experience leads to stories being told in a way that perpetuates harmful stereotypes, misses critical context and misleads readers.

We at IndigiNews care deeply about fair and accurate representation of Indigenous Peoples in the media. That’s why our team is led by Indigenous women.

I want to take this moment to introduce the people bringing you this work:

  • Cara McKenna is of Cree-Métis and Irish/settler descent. She is the editor of IndigiNews.

  • Aaron Hemens is a photographer, journalist and visitor in unceded syilx territory. He is Filipino on his mom’s side, and has both French and British roots on his dad’s. Aaron is a storyteller covering the "Okanagan" region, which is syilx territory.

  • Kayla MacInnis is an âpihtawikosisân iskwew who, in her work, mixes the visual and written worlds. Born in misâskwatômina (Saskatoon), she is a displaced Polish/Ukrainian & Scottish settler on her mother’s side and Métis from the Red River settlement on her father’s. She is a Contributing Editor.

  • Darla Antoine is of Syilx and settler ancestry. She is IndigiNews' Contributing Cultural Editor.

  • Dionne Phillips is Secwépemc on her father’s side and has Nuxalk and Cree roots on her mother’s side. She is a storyteller covering Secwepemcúl’ecw and writes a monthly newsletter about her work.

  • Meral Jamal is from India and is currently a visitor in Inuit Nunagut. She is a storyteller focusing on Indigenous law and governance.

Thank you for supporting this team as we continue to report on our communities in a way that makes you feel heard, understood and respected.

If you haven’t filled out our reader survey yet, we would also love to get to know you. It’s three questions long and will take you less than two minutes to complete.

hiy hiy,
